Turbojets at Ohio '02

Approximately 60% of the models were powered
by turbojets, predominately AMT's and JetCat's with some RAM engines as well.
During the hundreds of sorties flown, there were very few dead stick landings -
testimony to the reliability of this form of jet power. Even some of the so
called "engine failures" were traceable to operator errors in the form of fuel
system rigging, extended and faulty engine electrical wiring and insufficiently
charged E.C.U./pump batteries. There was at least one instance of F.O.D.
(Foreign Object Damage) caused by loose components inside the model.
The Ohio Jet Scramble,
like all such gatherings, presents great opportunities for all of us to learn
more about this challenging hobby.
Ken Jr. and Sr. Hartsfield introduced their recently finished BobCat. We understand from Ken Sr. that his wife helped with color selection and cockpit details. The first flights were successful, making the whole family pleased with their selection of the BobCat. |
This BobCat got a lot of exercise at the hands of Ryan McCaulley. Father Paul, flies it when Ryan takes a lunch break. |
BV's sport Rafale is
now equipped with wing tanks and powered with a single AMT AT-450. The properly
designed bifurcated tailpipe allows for cool running and maximum power. The
sound and sight is awesome. |
Twin BVM Phantoms are
now the trademark operation for the Malchione family. Dave Sr., brother Pete
and Dave Jr. attend the Ohio event every year. They also fly Bandits and will
have a new F-100 in the air soon. |
A superb airshow paint scheme with USAF markings was applied to this BobCat by Matt Short. Matt's first turbine model was very successfully introduced at his club's Jet Scramble. He chose an AMT AT-180 for the power plant. |
Francis Pischner assists the Kramer team for a "gear check" on this AMT powered BobCat. We have featured their perfectly finished models in previous pages. Perfect preparation and constant checking of all the model's systems adds up to flawless operation for this unusually enthusiastic and dedicated team of jet flyers. They definitely make AMT and BVM products look good at the shows. |
Roman Myrdacz's Bandit is now in its 3rd season and still looks brand new. The few landings that I witnessed were absolutely perfect - maybe that explains why. |
Tom Dodgen is giving the Malchione jet team a "JetCat" checkout. Their new F-100 in Thunderbird livery will be powered by a P-160. |
The Huns at Ohio
The first high
altitude fly over by the real F-100F presented a familiar profile. One could
have mistaken it for BV's own that performed in Saturday's airshow. Close, but
not quite - we are still shy an afterburner. See September sale for Metal-Kote special pricing - click here. |
