Columbus, Ohio
August 21-23, 1998
The Heart of Ohio Jet Scramble was held at the Darby Dan Airport just outside of Columbus on the weekend of August 21 to 23.
With 72 pilots in attendance and picture perfect flying conditions all of the equipment got extensively exercised, including the camera.
Of course it's always best to be there but if you weren't, perhaps these photos will convey some of the excitement. - Bob Violett
It's hard to go wrong with red, white, and blue paint schemes but Tim and Tracy Redelman took this one to a higher level with silver trim and trick lettering. This Bandit "T" is powered by the very reliable propane powered JPX T-260P. |
Albert Araujo, the "A" in "RAM" turbine engines chose the "Jolly Roger" scheme for his Bandit "T". The markings from ProMark are the same as used on the original BVM F-4 and fit the Bandit well. Wing tanks could be painted yellow to further enhance visibility. Of course the RAM 750 power plant performed flawlessly during the 3 days of flying. |
Ron Sorg came to the Jet Scramble from Cedarhill, Missouri to break-in his new Maverick and was 100% successful. The striking paint scheme is borrowed from a NAVY Phantom and the true colors are florescent orange and blue. Excellent craftsmanship like this offers spectators a real treat at the lunch time runway line-up. |
Steve Elias brought his AMT Pegasus powered Bandit from England to enjoy some Midwest summer flying. The Bandit wasn't designed for this larger turbine, but Steve and some of his friends made special installation parts and adapted it. The vertical performance is staggering and the engine is rarely at full throttle on the horizontal. Steve's experience as one of Englands best precision aerobatic pilots showed as he thrilled the crowd with some truly beautiful aerial displays. |
Formally from England but now living in West Palm Beach, Florida, Malcolm Kay also flew a Pegasus powered Bandit. This one is a ZAP sponsored machine in brilliant decor. Malcolm accomplished several flights at the Jet Scramble utilizing the standard manual start up procedure for the AMT. Also available from AMT is an AutoStart system that gets the engine going with one push of a button. |
Can jet modeling get any better than this? Dave Malchione coached son Dave on his first landing of the big twin phantom. At 15, Dave Jr. has now flown all BVM models including a JPX powered Bandit "T". From our observation - he made the best landings of the 3 day event. Dave's favorite seems to be his BVM F-16. |
The Flying Yankees color scheme is one that we haven't seen before but has just enough color and markings to make a T-33 stand out. Art Gajewski from Canton, Michigan seemed to be enjoying his "T Bird" logging several sorties during the 3 days of perfect weather. |
Anthony Wiencek from Raleigh, North Carolina had just finished this F-80 so he brought it to the Darby Dan facility for the first flight. Notice the different tones of silver paint used to accent the fuselage metal work. All rivets and markings are from ProMark. This F-80 exemplifies good craftsmanship. |
3 Bandits, 3 different turbine power plants. Terry Nitsch (far left) uses the AMT Mercury. Bob Violett (center) uses the RAM 750, and Dave Malchione uses the JPX T260P. |
